The Royal Shakespeare Company I (1968-69)

Gareth was a member of the RSC twice: in 1968-69, during which period he played a variety of supporting parts; then again in 1979-80, when he played some leading roles. From January to May 1969, Gareth toured the US as part of the Company, with performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit.

Gareth appeared in four RSC productions during this period. In King Lear, which had its Press Night on 10th April 1968, he played the role of First Messenger. Stephen Greif (later Travis in Blake’s 7) was also a member of the Company during this time:

In Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus (June 1968), Gareth had dual roles as the Vintner and as the Second Scholar:

A review of the production appeared in The Observer on 30th June 1968:

Troilus and Cressida had its Press Night on 8th August 1968. Gareth was understudy to Hector (played by Patrick Stewart). He presented the Prologue in some performances, as well as playing the character of Margarelon (one of Priam’s sons).

In Much Ado About Nothing (Press Night 14th October 1968) Gareth played a number of supporting roles:
